The author of “The Zone of Interest” dies after the premiere of the adaptation at the Cannes Film Festival

Renowned British writer Martin Amis, author of the book ‘The Zone of Interest’, died at the age of 73 last Friday (5/20), at his home in Lake Worth, Florida, USA. According to the British newspaper The Guardian, his wife Isabel Fonseca said the cause of death was oesophageal cancer. The news comes a day after the film adaptation of his novel premiered at the Cannes Film Festival.

His departure leaves a void in contemporary literature. Over the course of his career, Amis has published 15 works, including the disturbing Nazi drama “The Zone of Interest,” which hits the film market in an adaptation directed by Jonathan Glazer (“Under the Skin”). The film was one of the most anticipated by the critics present at the French festival.

The film chronicles the life of a family linked to a senior SS officer, who resides near the Auschwitz concentration/extermination camp in Poland. A review posted by Owen Gleiberman of Variety described the film as “chilling and profound”. He states that the film “exposes human darkness to light and examines it as if under a microscope.”

Amis was also known for the novels ‘Fields of London’ (1989), ‘Money’ (1984), ‘The Rachel Papers’ (1973), ‘Pregnant Widow’ (2010), ‘The House of Encounters’ (2006) and “The Yellow Dog” (2003). He is among the influential names in English literature, he has even written the memoir ‘Experience’, short story collections and non-fiction works.

In addition to “The Interest Zone”, his fourteenth book, other novels by Amis have also been adapted for the big screen. The book “Night Train” (1997) served as the basis for the film “Mysteries of the Universe” (2018), starring Patricia Clarkson and Jonathan Majors. In the same year, Amber Heard starred in ‘London Fields: Fatal Romance’. And one of her biggest bestsellers was the British mini-series “Money” (2010), starring Nick Frost.

The writer also wrote screenplays for films in the 80s, such as the sci-fi ‘Saturn 3’ and the romantic comedy ‘Electronic Dating’ (1989).

Born in Oxford, the writer studied English at the local university. He subsequently worked as a journalist and editor for British publications such as The Times and The New Statesman. With his death, Amis leaves behind his wife Isabel and their five children.
