Armie Hammer will not face sexual assault charges due to lack of evidence

The Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office has dropped the sexual assault charges against Armie Hammer (“Call Me By Your Name”). After a lengthy investigation conducted by the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), the office said in a statement it was unable to prove the rape allegations made against the actor.

With the statement, the office stressed that sexual assault cases are rigorously scrutinized. “In this case, prosecutors have conducted an extremely thorough investigation, but have determined that, at this time, there is insufficient evidence to charge Mr. Hammer with a crime,” they clarified.

Prosecutors highlighted the complexity of the relationship between him and the accuser as one of the justifications for the dismissal. The accuser, identified as Effie, turned to police in February 2021, alleging he was the victim of physical abuse during an ongoing relationship that lasted four years. Effie also claimed that she was brutally raped by Hammer in 2017. However, the actor has denied all the allegations made against him.

Encouraged by Effie’s allegations, several other women chose to come forward as victims of Hammer’s abusive behavior. The allegations included references to cannibalism and BDSM (acronym for Bondage, Discipline, Domination, Submission, Sadism and Masochism) fetishes. Shared with the statements were images of the actor’s sinister conversations with the women who accused him.

Amidst the controversy, Hammer was released by his agency, the recognized WME, and was removed from productions in which he was involved. At the time he was involved in the filming of the feature film “Death of the Nile” (2022). Due to the high costs for a remake, Disney decided not to cut it from the film, but he did not participate in the promotion and production has since been his last project.

Hammer gave his first interview about the controversy last February, after more than a year of silence. During the conversation with the Air Mail bulletin, he stated that all of his sexual relations were with consent. The actor also revealed that he contemplated suicide in the face of the scandal. Denying any involvement in criminal activity, he criticized the cancellation culture that has seen him walk away from several projects and end his career—until now.

In 2022, Discovery+ released the documentary “House of Hammer” (House of Hammer, in free translation). Divided into three parts, the series delved into the allegations against the actor and explored the scandalous history of his family. In Brazil, the production is also available on HBO Max.
