Thyroid cancer: understanding the disease defeated by Carla Diaz

Actress continues on ‘Dance of the Famous’ after exit-of-reality rumors

Charles Diaz continues in the race to be champion of “Dança dos Famosos 2023”, which is broadcast on Globo’s “Domingão do Huck”. In April, the actress had to clear up rumors of a possible exit from reality, with rumors that her thyroid cancer had returned.

At the time, the actress and former BBB had gastroenteritis, and she revealed the gossip was about old headlines, from when Carla Diaz was still battling cancer, in 2020.

But, after all, which cancer did Carla Diaz beat?

The thyroid is a gland located in the neck. Its main function is to produce hormones essential for the proper functioning of the body. According to INCA (National Cancer Institute), this type of cancer is the most common in the head and neck region and affects three times as many women as men, as in the case of Carla Diaz.

Among the main causes of thyroid cancer are exposure to radiation – such as radiotherapy – of the neck, even at low doses; family history of the disease and a diet low in iodine, a mineral found in fish, eggs and cheese. Prevention, like most cancers, involves a healthy lifestyle, with regular physical activity, a balanced diet and body weight control.

What are the main symptoms?

  • Lump on the neck, sometimes growing rapidly;
  • Swelling in the neck;
  • Pain in the front of the neck, sometimes radiating to the ear region;
  • Hoarseness or other voice changes that don’t go away
  • Difficulty swallowing;
  • Breathing problems;
  • Constant cough.

How to treat thyroid cancer?

Although the symptoms of thyroid cancer are very distinctive, when they start to appear, it is usually because the disease has already reached a more advanced stage. And in this way, the treatment can be compromised. Therefore, routine consultations and examinations are essential to detect a possible tumor at an early stage. With this, the chance of recovery increases significantly.

In addition to surgery to remove – total or partial – the nodules, which was the solution found by Carla Diaz, the treatment of thyroid cancer can also include therapeutic iodine supplementation.
