Last week, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle traveled to the UK with their two children to celebrate the Queen’s 70th anniversary on the throne. They flew home to Montecito on a private jet last Sunday, and a few days later Harry is preparing to sue the American tabloid The Mail on Sunday and its publisher Associated Newspapers Limited (ANL).
In February of this year, Sussex lawyers filed a libel suit against the newspaper in the Supreme Court. The claim relates to an article published in The Mail on Sunday in the same month. The material alleged that Harry was trying to keep another legal battle secret – with the UK Home Office. Moreover, according to the newspapers, he deliberately concealed the documents on this case. The prince allegedly sued the Ministry after he was denied royal protection despite offering to pay for security in person.

The day before, the court began to consider the claim and held preliminary hearings today. In the documents, Harry states that the article caused him “substantial damage, mental pain and suffering.” However, representatives of the publishing house claim that they did not try to discredit the prince. The Supreme Judge will have to figure out whether the material was really subjective in nature, and did not set out real facts. His decision is expected to be made public at a later date in writing.
Note that this is not the first lawsuit against the media for the Sussex couple. Earlier in 2019, Meghan Markle sued the same publication – and won. Representatives of The Mail on Sunday admitted defeat in a three-year trial and issued a public apology to Meghan Markle in one of the Sunday issues at the end of December 2021, although the final court decision in favor of the Duchess of Sussex was made at the beginning of winter – December 2. Then Megan, who had previously been severely criticized by former US President Donald Trump for an open letter to the US Congress, made an official statement.
