Fausto Silva received a heart transplant this Sunday (27/6), at the Albert Einstein Hospital, in Sao Paulo. The presenter, 73 years old, had been hospitalized since 5 August due to heart failure. The operation, which lasted about 2 and a half hours, was performed by the medical team composed of Fernando Bacal, cardiologist, and Miguel Cendoroglo Neto, director of Einstein’s medical and hospital services.

The new organ arrived at the hospital this Sunday morning, after a compatibility assessment carried out by the Transplant Center of the State of São Paulo. According to a statement released by the medical team, “the operation was performed successfully and Fausto Silva remains in intensive care, since the next few hours are important for monitoring the adaptation of the organ and the control of its rejection”.
Overview of transplants in Brazil
In a statement, the Ministry of Health revealed that between August 19 and 26, 11 heart transplants were performed in Brazil, not counting Faustão. “He received a heart after verifying the necessary compatibility for the procedure, as well as the other seven transplanted”, reads the official note.
Brazil has the largest public organ, tissue and cell transplant program in the world, with SUS funding about 88% of cases. But as of August 16, 386 people were waiting for a heart in the country. MC Marcinho, for example, died on Saturday (26/8) without being able to carry out the transplant, after his conditions worsened until his cancellation from the list.
Why did Faustão receive a rapid transplant?
The average wait for an organ in Brazil can be up to 18 months. The speed in the case of Faustão, who waited only a week after being queued, would have occurred due to various criteria, including the seriousness of the presenter’s health condition.
In the press release sent to the press, Albert Einstein’s team explained that the hospital was notified of the existence of a compatible organ, since the donor’s blood type was the same as the speaker’s (B). In this regard, all patients with blood types that could cause complications have already been excluded from the dispute.
An assessment of the seriousness of the candidates’ conditions was then carried out. Priority is given to hospitalized patients who require inotropic drugs and/or need help with cardiac function using a circulatory assist device. In this condition, ICU patients, such as Faustão, walk past candidates who are at home.
However, those who are in more critical conditions are discarded because they would not tolerate such a delicate intervention: this is what happened to MC Marcinho, who dropped off the list last week.
