CNN Brazil president criticizes investor taxation: ‘Being rich is not a sin’

João Camargo faces the challenge of remedying the financial imbalance of the blocked news channel in Ibope

On Sunday (3), “Folha de S. Paulo” brought an article signed by João Camargo. He directs Esfera Brasil, an organization that brings together some of the greatest entrepreneurs and entrepreneurs in the Brazilian manufacturing sector. Also, he chairs CNN Brasil.

Entitled “Being rich is not a sin”, the text contests the Lula government’s plan to increase taxation on the super-rich through “exclusive funds” and offshore investments.

Using examples from European countries and Argentina, Camargo argues that asking more of millionaires and billionaires does not benefit the Union or help reduce economic inequality.

“The reason for this failure is simple: in a globalized world, the rich have enormous financial mobility, managing to almost instantly allocate their money to more attractive places,” he explains.

“The taxation of the ‘super-rich’, defended as an instrument of social justice, paradoxically ends up resulting in a decrease in revenue and a worsening of social indicators, since it is the investments of the business world that generate wealth, innovation and employment” .

In another passage, the entrepreneur and television president denies the prejudices against those who have reached the top of the pyramid. “The Brazilian who built his legacy should be admired as the protagonist of a successful path,” he defends.

“He is the one who invests, engages, takes risks, innovates, creates wealth, generates jobs and pays large sums of taxes. He is a fundamental part of the machine that produces economic growth ”.

At CNN Brasil, João Camargo faces the challenge of breaking even. The broadcaster launched in 2020 records losses and does not take off in terms of audience, far behind GloboNews and Jovem Pan News.

The restructuring package he implemented resulted in dozens of layoffs. There is the possibility of changing headquarters (today the channel occupies a luxurious building in Av. Paulista) and even of changing its name in order to no longer pay for the right to use North American CNN.

The owner of CNN Brasil is Rubens Menin, a businessman with several businesses, including a large construction company and a digital bank. He has become Atlético Mineiro’s biggest financial supporter. According to “Forbes” magazine, he has assets of 1.5 billion dollars, equal to about 7.4 billion reals.
