The Brazilian trans actress is in serious condition after sexual reassignment in Thailand

Residing in Portugal, where she rose to fame after staging a protest in the theater, Keyla Brasil even celebrated the success of the surgery

Actress, performer and transsexual activist Keyla Brasil is hospitalized in “extremely serious” condition in a hospital in Bangkok, Thailand, due to complications from sex reassignment surgery, previously incorrectly called a ‘sex change operation’ .

According to the Portuguese NGO Opus Diversidades, the artist had a sudden illness in the post-operative period. She was taken from the clinic to a public hospital, she was diagnosed with an ischemic stroke.

Shortly before, he had published a video from his hospital bed celebrating the success of the operation. “Pepeka is finally here,” she wrote of the image in which he appears smiling.

According to the Rede D’Or de Hospitals website, “in ischemic stroke, some parts of the brain die and stop functioning because they no longer receive the blood supply necessary for their proper functioning, due to blockage of the veins and cerebral arteries”.

In a post, the NGO that welcomes transsexuals in Lisbon, where Keyla Brasil lives, says that the problem “has significantly affected the mental health” of the actress. An update says he will require brain surgery. Her family has been informed and the Brazilian embassy in Bangkok is monitoring the case.

A graduate of the School of Theater and Dance of the Federal University of Pará, Keyla Brasil became famous in the Portuguese press – and received attention from her blog – in January, when she invaded the stage of the traditional Teatro São Luiz, in Lisbon, interrupting a session of the theater show “Tudo About My Mother”.

Screaming, he protested against a ‘transfake’ attitude, that is, the representation of a transsexual person made by a cis artist. In this case, an actor played a trans woman.

“Get off the stage! Have respect for this place,” shouted the Brazilian. The curtain was lowered, leaving the cast out of the public eye. “What is happening is murder, the erasure of our identity as transvestites,” Keyla said.

“If they hired four women and three men, why don’t they hire trans people to play the character?”

Some spectators reacted against the demonstration. The actress did not let herself be intimidated. “Do you know why I work as a prostitute?… Because we don’t have the space to be here on this stage, in this sacred place… I would do this show for free.”

A few hours later, Keyla Brasil reported on a social network that she had received hateful messages and threats. She left Lisbon for a few days for fear of retaliation.
