The tragedy of Kayky Brito has a hero and the Internet court wants to elect the villain

Bruno De Luca is the subject of criticism and questions about his reaction after his friend’s investment

“Who are you to want to judge, with the vision of reaching just one foot, what is a thousand miles away?”, wrote the Italian playwright Dante Alighieri.

Based on excerpts of security camera images from Rio’s waterfront and several versions told by passers-by, much of the Internet feels comfortable mistreating Bruno De Luca.

He sees the host as a coward and “a friend of the jaguar” for not helping Kayky Brito when he saw his friend lying on the ground after being hit by the vehicle driven by the app’s driver.

On social media, posts about the accident generate countless negative comments. There are several theories regarding their behavior and their rapid exit from the scene.

They even say he would have managed to avoid being caught doing something illegal or inappropriate. People feel comfortable judging him – with a bias towards conviction – even before the police investigation is complete.

Maybe he was negligent. Maybe he was just thinking about his belly button and a possible implication. Maybe cowardly. Maybe, maybe, maybe.

And perhaps he felt a paralyzing emotion capable of blocking logical reasoning and leaving him so disoriented that he went away to deny the misfortune he had witnessed. Perhaps.

If in doubt, the hypotheses are countless. And from this shameful injustices can arise. The most sensible thing is not to join the herd effect or take on the role of judge in the Internet court.

The only certainty in this case is the role of the hero. It’s up to the driver Diones da Silva. All signs point to correct behavior behind the wheel and after the accident. Circumstances also placed him as a victim.

The gesture of promising to donate part of the sum raised in online crowdfunding to repair the car makes him an exemplary citizen. The best thing to do now is to hope for Kayky Brito’s recovery and wait for the authorities’ verdict.
