Valentina said she stopped the course because she was discouraged and offended, but she had no regrets
Daughter of presenter Tadeu Schmidt, Valentina Schmidt has revealed that she dropped out of college after being subjected to homophobia from teachers. The 21-year-old came out as queer and said she faced prejudice and was discouraged from continuing her communications course.
Now, Valentina studies Performing Arts at Casa das Artes de Laranjeiras (CAL), in Rio de Janeiro, and said she does not regret her choice.
“I had teachers who discouraged me. One in particular made a lot of homophobic comments towards me and also offensive comments towards my father. I thought: ‘I will not stay in an environment where I don’t feel welcome’. Even more so because I was discovering another passion, which is theatre. I don’t regret anything about my path,” he said.
The problems at the college began after she posted about LGBTQIA+ Pride Month on social media. She identified herself as queer, whose gender identity or sexual orientation does not fit heterosexual standards and moves between genders. The revelation had a huge impact on social media.
“When I came out, there was a big uproar. I understood that, given the visibility I had gotten as my father’s daughter, it would blow up. But since I posted it, I’ve seen people say that I had done. “To get attention. I would never do it. I did it because I finally felt comfortable with myself and I wanted to show the world that I am proud to be who I am,” she said in an interview with the newspaper O Globo.
Valentina also commented on the haters she encounters on social media, saying that nowadays she doesn’t get so angry anymore. “I was bullied at school for a long time and had to deal with all kinds of negative comments. If I can handle it, then I’m not afraid. There are comments that attack me almost every day. I get angry at what they write, yes, but I don’t let it bring me down or affect the people I love.”
In high school, Valentina had to change schools due to bullying. “I got to a point where I couldn’t take it anymore. I never accepted injustice and I always took a stand. People made fun of me for this and also for the eccentric way I dressed. I always liked it a lot of fashion and I wore things that didn’t always fit heteronormative fashion,” she reported.
Tadeu and Ana’s daughter Cristina is currently dating psychology student Chistiano Donnelly Vaz. “My parents have always been very relaxed about dating. Their priority is for me to be happy. And they liked Chris right away. They started a conversation wanting to know his intentions and his family.”
