On Monday afternoon, Kate Middleton, Duchess Camilla of Cornwall and Sophie, Countess of Wessex, joined other senior members of the British royal family – Prince William and Prince Charles – in the traditional ceremony of one of the oldest knightly orders – the Order of the Garter. The celebration, according to tradition, took place in the chapel of St. George in Windsor Castle.
Usually, Queen Elizabeth II herself, members of her family, as well as foreign monarchs, the prime minister, baronesses, all those who have been honored to be among the 24 members of the Order, take part in it. In the procession was seen former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, who was dedicated this year. He came to his first ceremony with his wife and children.
The Duchess of Cambridge opted for the perfect monochrome look – a bright blue coat dress with a Juliette Botterill hat, clutch, matching Aquazzura heels. Kate added G. Collins & Sons jewelry with diamonds and drop-shaped sapphires to the outfit. Sophie, the wife of Prince Edward, was in a soft pink Valentino set, which she combined with white accessories.
To date, Knights of the Order of the Garter are members of the royal family: Crown Prince Charles, knighted of the Garter in 1968, Princess Anne, Prince William. From foreign monarchs, the order was awarded to King Harald V of Norway, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, King Philip VI of Spain, and former Emperor of Japan Akihito.
Among the knights of the order were in 2005 the former British Prime Ministers Edward Heath, Baroness Thatcher and John Major, as well as Baroness Soames, the daughter of Sir Winston Churchill.
