Regina Duarte collecting cartoons on the streets reminds us of one of her best characters

With canvases in two exhibitions, the actress shows art with a new meaning of natural elements in a new career supported by fans

Hostile by most of her artistic class peers due to her support of Jair Bolsonaro and right-wing agendas, Regina Duarte needed to reinvent herself. The actress declared herself a visual artist.

Dedication to screens is nothing new. She was always painting. In 2013, some works were part of a charity auction at the Memorial da América Latina, in São Paulo, in aid of Casas André Luiz, a respected entity that serves people with various disabilities.

On that occasion, the costumes donated by Regina were also auctioned. There were pieces worn by her when she played Maria do Carmo, the protagonist of “Rainha da Sucata”, a hit soap opera broadcast in Globo’s 9pm time slot in 1990.

The character allows us to draw a parallel with the moment the actress is currently experiencing. At a certain point in the plot, the businesswoman loses everything and finds herself driving an old truck through the streets. “Junkyard! Old stove, refrigerator, engine parts, scrap metal!” she shouted to attract customers.

Just as Maria do Carmo had to face a difficult blow to overcome a blow, Regina Duarte had to find a new artistic direction after not receiving invitations from TV and being rejected by playwrights when trying to return to the stage.

One of the country’s most acclaimed actresses has been under a sort of ban since she left Globo in early 2020 to work as culture secretary in the Bolsonaro government. The foray into politics lasted less than three months.

In her studio Regina produces canvases from dry leaves, tree bark and other organic materials. She sometimes uses cardboard as a base. Photos in which she appears picking up boxes on the streets of São Paulo went viral after being given the wrong context.

No, the actress did not become poor. She only collects what would otherwise become rubbish to transform it into art with a strong ecological meaning. She could send an assistant out on the street, but, in a gesture of detachment, she goes in search of raw materials herself. And she plays with the situation too: self-irony is in fact an admirable virtue.

His first exhibition, entitled ‘Nature and Me: New Discoveries’, can be visited at the Aqua Arte shop, in the Moema neighborhood, south of São Paulo.

The actress’s paintings are also on display at the ‘Alegria Contemporary Art Exhibition’ at the Centro Brasileiro Britânico, in Pinheiros, in the west of the capital, until December 10th.

As a sign of prestige, Regina Duarte was chosen together with famous names in Brazilian visual arts, such as Antonio Peticov, Alina Fonteneau and Cássio Lázaro. Supported by fans and friends, she seems happy in her new career.
