What can cause death during liposuction surgery?

Dr. Diovane Ruaro, president of the Faculty of Plastic Surgery, says that the risks associated with liposuction are variable, as they depend on the size of the areas to be treated.

“It is common to associate different areas in liposuction, such as the abdomen, thighs, back, hips and armpits. However, this does not necessarily imply a greater risk for the patient, as long as all safety criteria are strictly respected, including the determinations of the anesthetist and cardiologist, together with the pre-operative risk assessments and stratifications”, he explains to Earth.

For this reason, the doctor emphasizes that the operation must be performed by qualified professionals in adequately equipped surgical centers. According to Ruaro, a thorough investigation should clarify the death.

The thermal blanket and anti-thrombus socks are essential

In general, there are also various possible causes of cardiac arrest during surgery of this type. “The main ones are fat embolism and pulmonary thromboembolism. The patient can also have a heart attack during the operation, he can have a stroke [Acidente Vascular Cerebral] and this causes cardiorespiratory arrest,” says plastic surgeon Ícaro Samuel, in contact with Terra.

According to him, to minimize risks in any plastic surgery procedure and, “especially in long-term liposuction, such as HD lipo,” it is essential that the preoperative procedure is performed correctly. This includes laboratory and imaging tests to analyze the patient’s health condition before sending him to the surgical center.

“[Em] In long surgeries we have to use anti-thrombus socks, pneumatic compression, which will massage the legs to avoid clots during surgery because the patient is unable to move. He has to use a thermal blanket to avoid losing his temperature because hypothermia also increases the risk of thromboembolism, so there are several precautions we take during the procedure,” he adds.

However, as Dr. Diovane Ruaro acknowledges, all plastic surgery procedures can lead to complications, even fatal ones. Luana had no children: she leaves her family, friends and boyfriend João Haddad, also known for the reality show “De Férias com o Ex”.
