Tonico Duarte played an important role in the sports coverage and also showed solidarity with other veterans fired by the Rio broadcaster
“Restless, angry, brilliant.” This adjective was used by Edney Silvestre in a farewell post to his friend Tonico Duarte. The two worked together at TV Globo and have been subject to a wave of cuts among veteran journalists in recent years. Another former global player, Chico Pinheiro, called him a “good teammate”.
Still employees of the Marinho family, presenters Fátima Bernardes, Leilane Neubarth and Renata Ceribelli reacted with sadness to the news of the editor’s death at the age of 69. Her body was found on Tuesday (19th) at home.
Tonico’s two stints at the Rio broadcaster totaled forty years. As editor-in-chief of “Globo Esporte” in Sao Paulo, he renewed the way of reporting on competitions and the daily life of teams and athletes. Subsequently, as general editor, he collaborated on various products, including Nelson Motta’s cultural column on the ‘Jornal da Globo’.
In November 2019, Tonico Duarte received the news of his dismissal. “I inform my friends that today the eyes of the street winked at me,” he wrote in a post, with his characteristic irony. Volunteer, he went out shooting.
He wanted to express his opinion on the suddenly fired reporters who had been working for decades and on Globo’s journalism director, Ali Kamel. “(Those fired) are all thoroughbreds of the profession. Whoever puts them up for grabs is a scoundrel.”
In December 2021, expressing solidarity with his colleague Isabela Assumpção, from ‘Globo Repórter’, who was fired after forty years on television, Tonico once again attacked his former boss and the decision to remove almost all the most experienced reporters from the air.
“…Ali Kamel’s melodramatic farewell letters. Since he can’t write, they sound like the tacky bolerões of Carlos Alberto or Lindomar Castilho. I could sum it up like this: ‘uncle, you have a lot of gray hair, it’s time to buy a farm and raise chickens’,” an excerpt from the post reads.
Unlike his colleagues, Tonico Duarte does not have a profile on the ‘Memória Globo’ project site, with a CV of prominent professionals who have worked in front of the cameras and behind the scenes to consolidate the station in 1st place among the public.
Target of criticism, Ali Kamel will leave his post this month. He will become the coordinator of the editorial committee of Grupo Globo, where Roberto Marinho’s heirs discuss with some executives the direction of the company’s companies, in particular TV Globo.
Born in Santos as Antônio Carlos Barneto Duarte, Tonico would have turned 70 on December 27th. He leaves behind a widow and two children. The Association of Sports Journalists of the State of Sao Paulo declared mourning over his death.
In addition to marking his name in the history of Globo journalism, he made a significant contribution to the newspaper ‘O Estado de S. Paulo’, for which he covered the World Cup in Argentina in 1978.
