Silvio off TV: hidden wife, tense separation, false lover and date of death

Now 93, far from the SBT studios and the media, the country’s most popular presenter has had his privacy exposed several times

Silvio Santos’ 60-year television career has been marked by success. But along the way there were some controversial episodes in the communicator’s personal life.

Although he did his best to preserve himself and his family, he ended up on the covers of celebrity magazines due to omissions, misunderstandings, gossip and ironies bought as truth.

Single for the fans, married in secret – Nicknamed ‘The Smiling Man’ on television right from the start for his irresistible friendliness, Silvio aroused the passion of women. He looked like a heartthrob.

For almost 20 years he kept his marriage to his first wife, Maria Aparecida Vieira, known as Cidinha, a secret. He wanted to sell the image of a confirmed bachelor without children so as not to disappoint his hopeful admirers.

Much later, the artist revealed that he regretted having hidden his wife and first two daughters, Cintia and Silvia. “When I speak to my conscience, I think it’s one of the unforgivable things I’ve done, given my immaturity,” he said in 1988.

The two separated in 1974. Three years later, Silvio experienced one of the saddest moments of his existence. “My greatest sadness was the death of my wife, at 39, from stomach cancer,” he said on the SBT stage.

Separation and reconciliation like in a Mexican soap opera – In 1978, the presenter officially married Íris Pássaro, with whom he began a relationship shortly after the separation from Maria Aparecida. The two met on a beach in Guarujá, on the coast of São Paulo. They had four daughters: Daniela, Patrícia, Rebeca and Renata.

In 1992 the marriage suffered a serious blow due to the exaggerated jealousy of the presenter. In a police report, Íris said her husband had “abandoned the house” and taken many items – including works of art – into a moving truck.

She went to court with a separation request. According to the newspapers of the time, Silvio had fired the villa’s employees to force his wife to take care of the household chores. The value of the pension was also discussed.

A few months later, Silvio and Íris make peace thanks to the intervention of their daughters. The “Man with the Trunk” has returned home. They have been together for almost 50 years, more united than ever.

Celebrity nominated as lover – When the communicator and his second wife made their marital crisis known to the press, rumors emerged that the mainstay would be singer Sula Miranda. At the time the “Queen of Truckers” presented a musical attraction on SBT.

Attacked from all sides, she was fired from the channel just as the presenter returned to his wife’s arms. In 2016, Sula broke her silence regarding the controversy that damaged her career and personal life.

“It was very difficult. I was too young and in my prime. I had just achieved my dream of having a prime time programme,” she told R7, denying the romance. “It was difficult to live that situation because I am an extremely correct person. I have values. Then people saw what my character was.”

Announcement of illness and date of death – In June 2003 Brazil was shocked by an article that appeared in the magazine ‘Contigo’. Interviewed in Florida, Silvio Santos said he had been in contact for days.

“I will stay here until my death, which by the way has already been declared. Last year I went to the Miami Medical Center and they said I only had six years left to live (I was supposed to die in 2009, at age 78). I have a very serious problem with my heart arteries. And they told me that from now on I just need to rest,” she said.

The presenter also stated that he is in a wheelchair, has lost 11 kilos in two weeks and needs frequent blood transfusions.

The repercussions were resounding. However, a photographer from the publication caught him looking healthy as he exited a shopping mall. Summary of the work: The dissolute Silvio Santos played a trick on everyone.
