Young, handsome, gay and married: the new French prime minister suffered from homophobia

Gabriel Attal is the target of prejudicial attacks just like his boss, President Emmanuel Macron

This Tuesday (9), in Paris, the position of the French Prime Minister was changed. Élisabeth Borne, 62, left and Gabriel Attal, 34, entered.

He becomes the youngest holder of the role in the French Fifth Republic, which began in 1958, and the only openly homosexual person ever.

Discreetly, Attal was brought out in the book written by a former schoolmate in 2019. When questioned shortly afterwards, he confirmed his sexual orientation without positioning himself as an activist. “As for homosexuality, I always thought we could accept it without claiming it,” he told Closer magazine.

In another interview, he said that he suffered from severe homophobia during his school days and also in the virtual environment, with anonymous attacks.

SOS Homophobie, an organization that supports the LGBT+ community, celebrated the young politician’s coming to power.

“We are very pleased to know that being gay today is no longer an obstacle to occupying management positions. Society is progressing and this visibility is going in the right direction,” she said in a statement.

Gabriel Attal is married to MP Stéphane Séjourné, 38, advisor to President Emmanuel Macron. According to news reports, she influenced her husband’s appointment.

The couple will now occupy the Hôtel de Matignon, a sumptuous Parisian palace that serves as the prime minister’s official residence.

A traditionally left-wing country, France approved gay marriage and the adoption of children by people of the same sex in parliament in 2013.

President since 2017, the equally heartthrob Macron, 46, is the subject of frequent questions about his sexuality. He claims homophobia and misogyny explain the rumours.

Many people do not accept his marriage to Brigitte, whose pupil he was, who is 24 years older than him. They have been together for almost three decades and have not had any children. She is the mother of three children from a previous marriage.

There is a segment of the French press that specializes in covering the intimate lives of the country’s politicians. Headlines about cheating and having children out of wedlock, for example, always spark national debate. The elegant and cultured French, who knew, could not resist gossip.
