The controversial protagonist of the Netflix series “The Prince Who Was Never King” has died

Accused of killing a young man in exile, Victor Emmanuel of Savoy would have been king of Italy if the monarchy had not been abolished

On Sunday (11), around 300 people gathered in front of the Metropolitan Cathedral of Turin, in northern Italy, for the mass of Prince Vittorio Emanuele of Savoy. He died on the 3rd, at the age of 86, following a serious infection, in Geneva, Switzerland.

Inside the church, inaugurated in 1498, there were illustrious guests such as the Prince of Monaco, Albert II, and the Queen Emerita of Spain, Sofia. The European press participated en masse.

Son of the last king of Italy, Umberto II, Vittorio Emanuele of Savoy came to prominence last year with the success of the documentary series “The Prince Who Never Was King”, available on Netflix.

The production recovers important facts of his life, from the exile after the family’s departure from Italy following the extinction of the monarchy to the most serious and controversial episode.

In August 1978, Vittorio was accused of the death of the young German Dirk Hamer near the island of Cavallo, Corsica. The crime of international scope has raised the question over the years: ‘did he kill the boy or not?’

The victim’s sister, model Birgit Hamer, fought tirelessly to prove the prince’s responsibility in court. The episodes present the testimonies of the main characters involved in the tragic story. Power of influence and glamor are the ingredients of the plot.

With the establishment of the republic in 1946, Victor Emmanuel of Savoy was banned from re-entering Italian territory until 2002. His triumphant return is shown in the Netflix series.

With the death of Umberto II in 1983, Victor became the heir to the throne that no longer exists. Now the position is occupied by his only son, Emanuele Filiberto di Savoia, 51 years old. At the funeral wake he supported his mother, the former water skiing champion Marina Doria, 89 years old.

“The Prince Who Never Was King” follows the surefire “true crime” genre, adding soap opera touches to the style of “The Crown.” Entertainment capable of satisfying those who love discovering the dark side of real families.
