Singer discusses family dynamics with Silvio Santos and the impact of being gay on a famous TV family
Tiago Abravanel spoke about the complex family dynamics with his grandfather, the iconic presenter Silvio Santos.
In an interview for the Cara a Cara podcast, Abravanel touched on sensitive points, such as the pressure of maintaining the image of a “margarine family” and how this has influenced his personal experience and acceptance, especially in relation to his sexuality.
The actor revealed that, for a long time, he repressed his true desires and identity, fearing damage to his family’s reputation. “Many times I stopped living, stopped feeling, because I thought I could ruin the image of the margarine family. I realized that it’s not about that. The margarine family doesn’t exist. It made no sense for me to hide all my desires from myself. and possibility for something that no one ever asked me to do. For example, my grandfather never told me, “don’t do that”. I never had this restriction that I couldn’t be who I am, ” he has declared.
Despite the freedom to be who he is, Abravanel emphasized the emotional and physical distance between him and his grandfather, clarifying that the lack of closeness is not due to his sexual orientation. “Unfortunately, to people’s joy or sadness, we don’t have this super closeness. And I’ve already talked about it. For countless circumstances. And it has nothing to do with whether I’m gay or stop being gay. What I am today he didn’t grow up in that family context. Not even Tiago Abravanel knows how Silvio Santos feels about him. Our closeness is not so close to knowing what he likes about me and what he doesn’t like,” he shared.
The actor also reflected on the importance of family relationships and how they shape individuals, regretting not having experienced a closer bond with his grandfather. However, he welcomes the change in family relationships in subsequent generations, noting that his cousins have the opportunity to establish a stronger bond with the patriarch of the family. “I didn’t have that relationship between grandfather and grandson with Silvio. And it’s nice that today my cousins have the opportunity to be close to grandfather Silvio”, he concluded.
