Ricky Martin reveals how his father motivated him to come out as gay: ‘What are you going to teach your kids…?

Ricky Martin recalled the moments before he publicly revealed that he is gay and shared how his father, Mr. Enrique Martin, encouraged him to do so for a powerful reason.

It was in March 2010 when the singer openly acknowledged his sexual orientation through an article published on his website.

“Today I accept my homosexuality as a gift that life gives me. “I feel blessed to be who I am!” he said then.

Why did Ricky Martin’s father want to accept being gay?

In a new conversation with Andy Cohen on his radio show on March 21, Ricky Martin reiterated that his work group did not want to admit his orientation.

“This will be the end of your career. You don’t have to tell the world. Your friends, your family know this, why do you have to go on camera and talk about it?’ he said they told him.

Although his “team” “didn’t understand the importance” of him being clean, his father, Don Enrique, did, especially after the artist welcomed twins Matteo and Valentino in 2008.

“He said to me, ‘What are you going to (do), teach your children to lie?’ You have to be open. You have to go… I want to help you. How can we do it;” he said.

“And I’m like, ‘Okay, Dad, I’m doing it. Give me a minute. I do not know how. I don’t know if through an interview. I don’t know if I want to write a letter and tweet it. I do not know. Give me a break. He will come,” he added.

The interpreter of ‘Una mordidita’ explained that he confessed that he is gay to his mother, Mrs. Nereida Morales, at the age of 18 and that it took her a while to understand.

“I was worried because I was like, ‘Oh my God, I don’t want you to get hurt and people out there are so cruel,’ so it took me a minute to accept it,” she said.

“But obviously when I did (let everyone know), I made sure he was on a plane on his way to see me. “So he was on the plane and I did what I did: I wrote a letter and I tweeted it,” he explained.

In the end, being honest with himself pays off for Ricky Martin: “I’d like to go out 20 times. “It felt incredible.”

“Of course, I started crying like a baby. You know, I hit send and I was like, “Oh, that’s it?” My assistant, who continues to be one, Paco, was next to me and I told him: “I think I need a hug,” he said.

Ricky Martin is ‘super happy’ since coming out as gay

In July 2020, Ricky Martin announced that before admitting that he is gay, he went through a feeling of discomfort.

“I could find God, but I wasn’t living to the fullest. “I was sad, depressed,” he commented on Apple Music’s Pud radio.

“I got to the point where I was fighting while I was writing my book (‘I, Ricky Martin’), going, ‘Am I gay? Am I bisexual?'” (…) And then I said, “Rick, you’re a very lucky gay man,” he said.

“I wrote it and hit send and then I cried like crazy. And since then I have been very happy,” he concluded.
