Omar Gelles, Colombian composer, singer and accordionist, author of the hit “The Paths of Life”, died at the age of 57 this Tuesday, May 21.

The artist, who was king of Vallenato in 1989, died at the Erasmo clinic in Valledupar, a city considered the world capital of said music, after a heart problem.

According to the first information, Gelles would have suffered a heart attack while playing a tennis match.

For a few weeks now, his health has been worrying his followers. It wasn’t until April 29 that the singer-songwriter had to be checked into a clinic in Miami, Florida.

According to what was known at the time, Gelles was performing a musical performance when he suddenly collapsed on stage.

The emergency arose due to severe pain in the chest and arms. And the star suffered from high blood pressure (hypertension).

Artists bid farewell to Omar Geles

After the death was announced, condolences began to circulate in the music world.

“Folklore in mourning. “Vallenato King” Omar Antonio Geles Suárez died in Valledupar,” the Vallenata Legend Festival wrote on X’s account.

“He, in his musical career as an accordionist and composer, achieved great triumphs and knew how to give glory and honor to the music he loved so much until his last days. Peace in his grave. Farewell to the King,” he added.

The death was also mourned by Carlos Vives, who remembered him in addition to being a musician as a “talented actor” with whom he shared some TV series about Vallenato artists.

“It is not easy to accept that an artist like Omar Geles, with so much talent, with so much joy, with so many stories to tell, with so much love for people, left suddenly,” the interpreter noted on his social networks. .

“I could tell you many stories of a truly brotherly artist, unselfish and dear to all,” he concluded.

Who was Omar Gelles?

Omar Geles and Miguel Morales created the group Los Diablitos in 1985, which became very popular in Colombia and other countries such as Venezuela and Paraguay, with romantic vallenatos and hits such as “The Paths of Life” and “How I Pay My God”‘.

In 2004, after breaking up with Morales, the artist changed the name of the group to La Gente de Omar Geles with which he has remained active to this day.

He composed hundreds of songs, including ‘Tarde lo met’, made a hit in the 90s by Patricia Teherán and the group Las Diosas del Vallenato, and others such as ‘Don’t try’, ‘A blank sheet ” and “Sueños”. forgot”.
