A man has been arrested on suspicion of murdering the singer Jorge Sebastián Pop Chocoj, better known as Farruko Pop, who auditioned to participate in the “La Academia” program.

Agents from the Department of Specialized Criminal Investigations, in Guatemala City (Guatemala), arrested Carlos ‘N’, 20, this Sunday, May 26, according to Agencia Guatemalteca de Noticias.

Authorities say the matter will be implicated in the death of the 18-year-old indigenous artist from Guatemala, Prensa Libre reports.

The suspect in the death of Farruko Pop is said to be a member of the “Barrio 18 gang”

Uniformed officers raided a house in the El Limón neighborhood as part of their investigations into Farruko Pop’s murder, the aforementioned media reported.

At the time of Carlos ‘N’s arrest, he was found with a 17-year-old juvenile who had an active missing person alert since August 2022.

Likewise, legal documents of both were found, a mobile phone and a motorcycle were reported stolen, among others.

“The seized evidence will be analyzed to see if it has any connection to the murder of Jorge Sebastian Pop Chocoy,” the local Public Ministry said.

The National Civil Police reported that although the young woman had an active notice of her absence, she was transferred to the Prosecutor General’s Court as her case is investigated.

The LaHora.gt portal reports that the accused would be a “member of the Barrio 18 gang,” which uses abandoned houses to bury its victims.

On Saturday the 25th, the National Institute of Forensic Sciences stated that the cause of death of the “influencer” was asphyxiation due to strangulation and that it occurred between May 20 and 22.

Farooq Pope’s body was discovered in a grave on a vacant property in zone 18, which has high rates of violence.

Alleged killer of Farruko Pop pleads ‘not guilty’

While being held in a prison, Carlos ‘N’ was interviewed by a reporter from TV Azteca Guatemala.

“Then you plead not guilty to this?” the reporter asked him, referring to what happened to Farruko Pop, to which he replied in the negative.

For its part, the Ministry of the Interior (Interior) said it was investigating a prison southeast of the capital, in an operation also linked to criminality.

As a result, he explained, four inmates were isolated in prison indefinitely, including one of the leaders of the gang called “Mara 18,” Aldo Dupie Ochoa Mejía.
