After passing the Cannes Film Festival in France, the restored version of “Deus eo Diabo na Terra do Sol” will debut Wednesday (7/6) in Brazil, with a special session at the Cinemateca Brasileira in Sao Paulo. The feature film will be screened in the outdoor area of the space, in a 4k version, and accompanied by a debate with the participation of the restoration managers, producer Lino Meireles and director Paloma Rocha, daughter of director Glauber Rocha.

The restoration was carried out at Cinecolor, a partner company of Cinemateca Brasileira.

The original copy was kept at the Cinemateca, in Sao Paulo, and consisted of five cans of 35mm negatives in perfect condition. Thankfully the scrolls were not in the place that caught fire and which kept part of Glauber Rocha’s collection, which was considered lost until an official report revealed the disaster caused by the fire.

“Deus eo Diabo na Terra do Sol” is one of the most important works of Brazilian cinema. Presented at the 1964 Cannes Film Festival, it garnered so much praise from international critics that it ended up giving Cinema Novo the status of one of the most important film movements in the world.

Glauber Rocha’s masterpiece brings together the themes of drought, religious exploitation of the poorest and crime in a sort of western caboclo. The plot follows cowboy Manuel (Geraldo del Rey) and his wife Rosa (Yoná Magalhães) fleeing inland after killing a colonel who tries to trick him. In the middle of the desert they find two iconic figures: Sebastião (inspired by Antonio Conselheiro and lived by Lidio Silva), who says he is divine, and the bandit Corisco (Othon Bastos), who defines himself as demonic. Meanwhile, the mercenary Antonio das Mortes (Maurício do Valle) is on the trail of him.

It is worth mentioning that the film won a sequel, “The Evil Dragon vs. the Holy Warrior” (1969), centered on the character of Antonio das Mortes.
