Far from the SBT, without receiving visitors or calls: how the last days of Silvio Santos were

The Communicator had chosen to live in isolation in his villa, surrounded only by his family.

One of the greatest icons of Brazilian television, Silvio Santos, died this Saturday, the 17th, due to bronchopneumonia resulting from an H1N1 infection. In recent times he had been away from SBT and lived in isolation in his villa, surrounded by his family, but without receiving visitors or answering phone calls.

Silvio had been away from the studios of his station since 2022. From that year on, his daughter Patrícia Abravanel took over his Sunday program. At the same time, Daniela Beyruti, another daughter, took over the presidency of the group.

He made a brief appearance on the program “Fofocalizando” in December last year, when he was given a birthday surprise. On that occasion, the owner of the station expressed his happiness with the honor. “I am very grateful for this gift from the fans. The idea is sensational and gives me the energy to return,” he said.

Before the communicator’s death, presenter Carlos Alberto de Nóbrega, 88, revealed that his last contact with the SBT owner had occurred in 2020, during the presentation of the Imprensa Trophy.

According to the host of A Praça é Nossa, Silvio Santos “only spoke to those who wanted to talk” and did not receive visitors. A longtime friend of the host, Carlos Alberto has learned to live with homesickness, respecting the entrepreneur’s wishes. The statements were made in an interview with Flow News.

At the time, Carlos Alberto also said that the information he had about Silvio was given to him by Jassa, the hairdresser of Homem do Baú, and by a nephew of the communicator.

However, as reported, Jassa’s last visit to Silvio Santos’ home was in February, as the communicator had chosen not to receive anyone else and to remain in isolation. According to Silvio’s nephew, he spent most of his time sitting on the couch, watching his programs over and over again.

Death of Silvio Santos

Presenter Silvio Santos, at the age of 93, died in the early hours of Saturday 17. He had been hospitalized at the Albert Einstein Israelite Hospital, in the Morumbi neighborhood, in the southern zone of São Paulo, since the 1st of this month, to treat an illness caused by the H1N1 virus, a subtype of influenza A. The information was released by SBT on social media.

“Today the sky rejoices with the arrival of our beloved Silvio Santos. He lived 93 years to bring happiness and love to all Brazilians. The family is very grateful to Brazil for more than 65 years of living together with great joy,” SBT said in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

The presenter’s cause of death was reportedly due to bronchopneumonia resulting from H1N1 infection, according to a medical bulletin released by the hospital.

“The Albert Einstein Israeli Hospital regretfully confirms the death of Mr. Abravanel, Silvio Santos, aged 93, which occurred today, August 17, 2024, at 4:50 a.m., due to bronchopneumonia resulting from an influenza infection (H1N1).
