The British singer defended the animal’s return after it ‘ate the family’s passports’
The singer Lily Allen is receiving criticism on social media after revealing she returned an adopted dog to the shelter. The British woman, who revealed the information on her podcast, defended her actions – and ended up in a row with PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), a non-profit organization that works to protect animals.
On your podcast Do you miss me?, Lily shared a story that happened in 2021, when she adopted Mary and the dog was “very rude.” According to the singer, Mary ate the family’s passports, creating a “logistical nightmare.”
In response, PETA posted the story on its X account, writing, “Dogs are a lifelong commitment, Lily Allen. It’s not fair to treat them like accessories and discard them when they’re not convenient.” The organization, in a tongue-in-cheek move, also reportedly sent the singer a stuffed dog that doesn’t require “the care, patience, and commitment” of a real dog.
Lily Allen’s Explanation
Lily Allen’s response, published in X two days later, provided more detail on the story. In her post, she said she had received death threats following the revelation and criticized clickbait headlines that sensationalized the relationship. In a fuller account, the singer reiterated that the family had tried to address Mary’s issues and had sought expert advice.
“We rescued Mary from a shelter in New York and loved her very much, but she developed separation anxiety and reacted in different ways,” she said. “We worked with the shelter, who referred us to a specialist and a trainer. […] and after many months and discussions everyone agreed that our house was not the best place for Mary.”
“We knew the home she went to and she came home less than 24 hours after she returned. We were unable to meet Mary’s needs and her happiness and well-being were our focus in making this decision, no matter how difficult it was,” he recalled.
“We tried with all our strength and for a long time, but passports were the straw that broke the camel’s back”

PETA responded to this second post, criticizing Lily’s original stance in telling the story on her podcast. “You laughed when you talked about abandoning Mary and ending this dog’s life. She thought she had a loving home and you threw her away, calling her a ‘life-ruining dog.’ Shame on you. You don’t deserve the stuffed dog we sent.”
In response, Lily said that people laugh when they talk about tragic events and accused PETA of attacking people who only want to do what’s best for animals’ lives.
People laugh when they talk about hurtful things all the time, it’s quite normal. I made it clear that we didn’t abandon her and she was rehomed with people we knew almost immediately. Why the perpetual lies? What kind of animal welfare charity tries to shame someone… https://t.co/SLORFjFauN
