Shakira makes major statement to ‘live in peace again’: agreed for ‘her children’

In November 2023, Shakira reached a deal with the Spanish justice system to plead guilty to defrauding the national treasury of 14.5 million euros ($15.8 million).

After admitting the crime, she agreed to cover a 7.3 million euro ($7.9 million) fine in exchange for a reduced sentence.

The authority sentenced her to three years in prison, which she could avoid by paying a total of 432,000 euros ($472,000).

In a statement, the singer said: “I made the decision to finally resolve this matter considering what was best for my children.”

She is the mother of Milan and Sasha, whom she had with Gerard Pique, from whom she announced her separation in June 2022.

Shakira explains her truth to “protect” her children

Almost a year after what happened, Shakira decided to send a letter through El Mundo newspaper in which she delves into the reasons why she admitted to the crime.

“But the most disappointing thing was to see that a state institution seemed more interested in publicly burning me at the stake than listening to my reasons,” he said.

Suerte’s interpreter opined that the Spanish Tax Agency made up an “artificial story” to make her a “tax resident since 2011” in her country so they could charge her.

She made it clear that that year what she wanted was to progress her romance with Gerard Pique and that’s why she visited him in Barcelona.

“Whenever he came back, he did it to make the relationship prosper, not because of the ‘calling to stay,'” he said, stressing his innocence.

The Colombian claimed that if she now returns to the subject again it is because of her children, with whom she moved to Miami, Florida, in April 2023.

“I want to leave my children with the legacy of a woman who explained her reasons calmly and in her own time, when she felt it was necessary, not when she was forced to,” he said.

“I need them to know that I made the decisions I made to protect them, to be there for them and to get on with my life. Not out of cowardice or guilt,” he added.

Shakira longs to ‘live in peace again’

Shakira also pointed out that she wrote this article because of “the need to write my own story.”

“My dear friend Gabriel García Márquez, whom I miss so much, titled his memoirs ‘Live to Tell.’ Literature was so important to him that he thought he lived to be able to tell stories,” he said.

“Well, in a similar way I ‘tell him to live’, to be able to reclaim my life so that no one writes my story about me. As with my songs, I sing to live quietly again, to turn the page,” he added.

Concluding, he noted: “The tax officials who judged me may not be too happy to read this, but frankly, I couldn’t care less. “I didn’t write it for them.”
