Cicerone’s death came just over a year after he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. According to Pies, the reason for the decision was the fear that the disease would worsen and that he would suddenly lose consciousness. Only he knew the choice.
“No one was consulted. Antonio didn’t want it. He only gave notice yesterday [terça-feira, 22] his sister Marina, who was devastated, but understood and accepted his position,” Pies told the newspaper The globe.
He will return to Brazil on Thursday 24th, with Cicero’s ashes. He explained that the process was quite bureaucratic and required several exams and certificates for the method to be accepted.
“He has always, always defended the freedom to commit euthanasia and assisted suicide. In this he was admirably consistent. That’s why I didn’t react with so much surprise. [à decisão]. It was definitely a dignified death. He died peacefully, holding my hand, very calm and without any anxiety. After the medicine he fell asleep and, within half an hour or so, he died,” recalled the costume designer.
Pies explained that the future of the disease is known and that there is no cure yet. Therefore, she respected his decision and supported him. “I admire courage and determination immensely. He always supported every form of freedom, and this was another,” he said.
“As regards prejudices about euthanasia and/or assisted suicide, I see that they are increasingly accepted by different types of people. It’s decreasing, it seems to me. But it must be clear that these resources are only possible in the case of serious illnesses, with documented suffering and without cure. It all happened only after the Swiss authorities accepted the case on the basis of evidence. If people still have prejudices, it can only be due to religious dogmas. Cicero talks about it in the statement he left,” he said.
Cicero left a letter to friends and relatives, in which he stated that the situation he was going through was “unbearable”. He describes that he no longer recognized some people he met on the street, he was no longer able to write poems and philosophical essays, nor could he concentrate on reading, which was the thing he liked most in the world.
Before he died, he and his husband spent a few days in Paris, France. There they visited museums and restaurants, without regrets.
