The day before, the 37-year-old Duke of Sussex spoke at an informal UN meeting in New York with a touching speech dedicated to the International Day of Nelson Mandela. Harry talked about how he first visited Africa at the age of 13, after which he fell in love with this continent and for a long time sought solace there after the death of his mother Diana, Princess of Wales.
Ever since I first visited Africa at the age of 13, this continent has always given me hope. In fact, for most of my life it was my lifeline, a place where I again and again found peace and healing, – the prince admitted, – This is the place where I felt the presence of my mother and sought solace after her death, and where I realized that he found a kindred spirit in his wife. That is why I work so hard here.
This is not the first time the duke has been open about his love for Africa. Back in 2019, Harry made a working visit to Botswana, where he helped local schoolchildren plant trees in a national nature reserve.
Fifteen years I have been coming back here, this is a real escapism … Here I have some really close friends, – the duke said then, – I came here in 1997 or 1998, right after my mother died, and it was a great place to escape from grief . I feel a deep connection with this place.
In addition to a touching mention of his late mother, the Duke of Sussex’s speech touched on a number of important issues, including climate change, poverty and racial intolerance. From the audience, Harry was supported by his wife Meghan Markle, who listened carefully to the speech and glowed with pride for her lover.
For the special occasion, Meghan, 40, dressed up in a black pencil dress, which she complemented with laconic accessories – a Mulberry bag and a pair of pointed suede studs. The Duchess completed the look with a graceful ponytail and minimalist jewelry. Harry chose a smart navy blue suit with a tie and a starched white shirt.
