Globo exaggerates in the casting of “nepobabies” for its soap operas

The broadcaster has hired at least three famous children for its productions

In the 90s, when the discussion was not yet so underway, it was not uncommon to come across partners of Globo directors in prominent roles in the company’s soap operas. This does not mean, of course, that favoritism did not take into account their talents – many of which were undeniable – but it made it clear that a system existed that did not take nepotism into account. Now, in 2024, the debate seems to have turned to the heirs.

Since it was coined, the expression “nepobabies” has spread like wildfire on social media. After all, regardless of their abilities, the children of celebrities do not have the same starting points or privileges in life as those with another type of story. Globo, however, seems about to enter a phase that does not take this factor into account.

Explained: In the next few months alone, at least three children of famous people will have prominent roles on the channel. In the remake of “Vale Tudo”, for example, two of them secured a place. Pedro Waddington, son of Helena Ranaldi and Ricardo Waddington, and Felipe Ricca, son of Adriana Esteves and Marco Ricca. Both join Pedro Novaes, heir to Letícia Spiller and Marcello Novaes, who found success – with good reason – as the protagonist of “Garota do Momento”.

It is important to clarify this, once again: everyone, without a doubt, has their own guaranteed qualities and talents. The problem isn’t with any of the young actors personally, but rather with a system that perhaps hasn’t realized that it’s susceptible to overreach in an industry where so many people have been trying their luck for so many years, so hard. Globo should be a little more parsimonious in these types of choices. Otherwise you will be increasingly susceptible to criticism for favoring relatives of famous people.
