Actress dies aged 33 after consuming frog poison during retreat

Marcela Alcázar Rodríguez died at the age of 33 during a spiritual retreat in Durango, Mexico. The incident occurred in the early hours of December 1.

The actress participated in a ceremony in which she ingested kambó, a traditional substance derived from South American frog poison used for healing purposes.

According to preliminary reports, Marcela began to experience vomiting and severe diarrhea shortly after consuming the substance. Despite being rushed to a Red Cross hospital, he did not survive.

The Durango State Attorney General’s Office has launched an investigation to determine the exact circumstances of his death. In addition, they are looking for the alleged shaman, who allegedly ran away.

Production company Mapache Films, who worked with Marcela, sent their condolences to the family.

“With deep sadness, today we say goodbye to our colleague and friend Marcela Alcázar, we also wish a speedy departure for her family and closest friends. RIP.”

According to Luis Manuel Naranjo, president of Mexico’s College of Psychologists consulted by Milenio newspaper, diarrhea and vomiting are considered part of the ritual’s “cure.”

“The person started vomiting and the shamans who were in charge blocked the medical services, one of the side effects of that is vomiting, it’s normal for people to vomit because they’re administered as part of the treatment, the cleansing, when you clean the yourself is when you vomit.’

What is kambó and what is it for?

Kambó is a substance obtained from the secretion of the two-colored frog Phyllomedusa, a species that lives in the Amazon region, which is traditionally used by various indigenous tribes for medicinal and ritual purposes.

Believed to help eliminate toxins from the body, kambó is used by some people to treat addictions, depression and autoimmune diseases, as well as to overcome emotional blockages and improve mental clarity.
