Why does the “girl on the plane” have more followers than celebrities?

Jennifer Castro has surpassed the mark of celebrities such as Fernanda Torres and Duda Beat

For three days now, social media has been dominated by a single story: that of the woman who refused to give up her seat on the plane to a naughty child. In addition to the debate whether he was right or wrong, further developments emerged: interviews on television, revelation of the identity of the minor’s mother, who filmed and broadcast online. None of this, of course, equaled the amazement of seeing, in a short time, that the hitherto anonymous Jennifer Castro had surpassed two million followers on Instagram and had even made her first advertisement.

To give you an idea, the figure is higher than that of Fernanda Torres, an actress with great chances of being nominated for an Oscar next year, or Duda Beat, holder of numerous successes, who to date has not reached her first million . The amazement is genuine, but not much thought is given to the reasons for this. And a combination of factors must explain the feat.

The first is, of course, the collective catharsis awakened by such stories. Practically as happens in reality TV, hating or idolizing someone collectively becomes a sort of trend, albeit temporary. No one wants to be left out of the current debate and needs to have an opinion. By banding together based on their findings, people don’t create bubbles that burst and dominate the mainstream.

“Digital laziness” also adds to this herd effect. So anxious for the first statement or continuation of the dispute, users don’t want to bother searching. Following someone and receiving content in your feed is more convenient. But the main and undeniable fact is that Brazilians, so accustomed to injustice, must, at some point, offer compensation to those who have suffered abuse.

By giving Jennifer millions of followers, the company is giving her a gift and also a princess story, like those Sunday shows. Now, she, offended, will change her life and “will be happy”. Hatred has been bypassed.

It remains to be seen whether all these people who have declared an affinity for her on the Internet will continue to consume her content. And again: if they will be able to produce relevant content. The first criticisms have already emerged. Whoever gives the gift also decides to take it away.
