The director-turned-celebrity annoys many people on the channel and leaves the station in a delicate situation

In recent days, the press, social media and Globo’s ‘radio corridor’ have echoed the rumor that Boninho could leave the station before his contract expires next year.
The speculation started on the 11th, when presenter Ana Furtado announced the end of her relationship with the channel after 26 years.
Boninho would have been disgusted by his wife’s dismissal and threatened to leave. This alleged furious reaction has not been confirmed by either party.
Another reason for his displeasure would be the decisions that have been imposed on him. Example: he preferred Marcos Mion to replace Tiago Leifert in BBBbut he was forced to accept Tadeu Schmidt.
Until recently, it would have been unthinkable to see the versatile director outside of Globo. This possibility became real after TV gave up some of his greatest talent.
Among them, the soap opera author Aguinaldo Silva (41 years in company), the soap opera director Dennis Carvalho (47 years on the air) and the presenter Fausto Silva (32 years on the air).
In addition to those mentioned, dozens of other professionals with valuable status were surprised by the dismissal or non-renewal of contracts. Cutting high incomes has to do with financial restructuring to increase profits.
What is said at the station is that there are only two untouchables: journalism general manager Ali Kamel and production manager Ricardo Waddington, head of soap operas and entertainment programs.
Below him, Boninho is the executive director of the Variety genre. He has amassed so much power and popularity (he has 9 million followers on Twitter and Instagram) that he has grown bigger than his title.
After all, what’s the chance that he’ll go away?
Globo’s top management claims that “no one is irreplaceable”, however, it would be difficult to find another professional with the same productivity as Boninho.
Lead a refined team that gets projects off the ground quickly. Among the hits (such as the The voice is the new cauldron) and fiascos (the recent Zig Zag Arena is in the list), the balance is positive.
In case of BBB (the ‘golden egg chicken’, with a turnover of R $ 1 billion in the latest edition), the director has become a reality show character, with strong interaction with viewers on social networks and appearances on the program . Without it, there could be a reduction in engagement.
Globo has long lost fear that former contractors could wreak havoc on its audience if they turn to key competitors, Record and SBT.
In Boninho’s case, the risk is frightening. With a good format in hand and everything he knows about how the channel works, he could upset global leadership.
Another advantage Marinhos would have in ‘keeping’ Boninho would be to ensure a worthy successor to Ricardo Waddington. Few professionals have the skills to be the captain of the broadcaster’s art area.
Part of the press claims that Globo is considering firing Boninho because of his salary. There is talk of R $ 400,000, but his earnings are certainly much higher.
It would be a stupid economy for the channel. This amount is modest compared to the revenues that the attractions under his command generate for the broadcaster.
The main reason for Boninho’s hypothetical “frying” revolves around the war of egos behind the scenes, where there is a fierce dispute over power. Indolent, he does not bow to anyone.
Despite these internal conflicts, the chance that Boninho will remain at the station, where she has worked since 1984, is greater than resignation or dismissal.
He knows that, even without absolute power, it is better to remain at the Globe than to face the limits of other open channels, which would not give the same working conditions, or will ‘disappear’ on pay TV or on some streaming platform.
The director’s connection with the Rio station goes beyond the relationship between employee and company. He and his father – former Globo vice president José Bonifácio de Oliveira Sobrinho, aka Boni – own TV Vanguarda, a Globo affiliate in Vale do Paraíba, in the interior of São Paulo.
Between gossip and truth, this wait for Boninho’s stay or departure makes it even more evident and strengthens his influence on the net and on the internet. The nickname “big boss” never made so much sense.
