With the vampire, Ney Latorraca marked generations and was a queer icon

Vlad, from “Vamp”, returned to soap operas and theater, and is still remembered today

Ney Latorraca has had a career that few actors have had and will have. He was a heartthrob, he was funny, he was a villain. He didn’t stick to any label and because of this he managed to achieve great success even though he was already past his youth. It is difficult to list just one role that has marked him in particular, but certainly a few can be listed: Vlad, the vampire from “Vamp” (1991), Barbosa, from “TV Pirata” (1986).

Vlad was so successful and marked an entire generation to such an extent that he ended up being brought back in “Vampire’s Kiss” (2002) to compete against Tarcisio Meira, who played Boris. His versatility led him to unforgettable musicals and collaborations.

Daring, he also played a rape scene with Vera Fischer in the early 1980s and spent more than a decade in theaters alongside Marcos Nanini, in “The Mystery of Irma Vap.”

Ney has always attracted attention behind the scenes for his strong personality. He was best friends with iconic figures like Sandra Bréa, certainly a funny man among his peers. Perhaps this is why he has preferred to spend the last few years isolated, away from the spotlight. In a recent statement, Maitê Proença says he got “tired” of always being the funny one. She spent her last days at home, in the company of her husband, Edi Botelho, with whom she had been married for 30 years.

Even without becoming an activist, he quietly became a queer icon. And this made many people admire him even more. His legacy will always be illuminated through iconic characters and interviews, such as the one in which, ironically, he pretended to be engaged and about to become a father, on “Planeta Xuxa”. Ney was giant.
