The actor had been fighting prostate cancer since 2019, the second most common type of cancer among men in Brazil
The famous actor Ney Latorraca, 80 years old, died this Thursday, 26 years old, in Rio de Janeirodue to pulmonary sepsis, according to his consultant. He had been hospitalized since December 20 at the Clínica São Vicente, in Gávea.
Moacyr Silva, an infectious disease specialist at the Israelite Albert Einstein Hospital, explains that sepsis is the name given to an inflammatory reaction associated with an infectious condition, which can be of any nature.
In the case of pulmonary sepsis, the main target is the lung. According to the National Health Service (NHS), the public health system in the United Kingdom, the lung is among the sites most frequently associated with the development of sepsis. In addition to that, there are the urinary tract and the abdomen – it is not always possible to determine the main focus.
According to the Mayo Clinic in the United States, sepsis results from the body’s inadequate response to this primary infection. “Infection-fighting processes turn against the body, causing organs to malfunction.”
Sepsis is a serious disease, as explained by infectologist Hélio Bacha, of the Brazilian Society of Infectious Diseases (SBI), and can progress to septic shock.
“Shock is a medical condition in which there is no blood perfusion in the tissues (i.e. the blood cannot provide him with enough oxygen and nutrients). There are different types of shocks. The most serious and difficult to resolve is septic shock”, explains Bacha.
Experts point out that there is greater concern for fragile patients, those of extreme age (newborns and the elderly) and those who are immunosuppressed, for example.
Latorraca, for example, had been fighting prostate cancer since 2019, the second most common type of cancer among men in Brazil. The actor underwent surgery, had his prostate removed and was considered to be in remission (when there are no detectable signs of cancer on tests). The disease returned in August this year, already metastasized, that is, it had spread to other structures of the body (there is no information on the location of the other tumors).
However, according to experts, sepsis can affect any patient, even those not previously considered vulnerable. Treatment has improved greatly in recent years, but the main predictor of a good prognosis is early identification and adequate treatment of the primary infection.
Sepsis can be difficult to identify. Silva explains that the inflammatory reaction of sepsis usually results in pain, warmth in the area, fever and malaise. “Usually, pulmonary sepsis results in pneumonia, which is the main feature of this patient. He may have cough, expectoration, rib cage pain when breathing.”
