After being mistaken for flannel, former Globo star Mayara Silva speaks out about stereotypes and prejudice
Mayara Silvawho was part of the G1 team in 1 Minute, on TV Vanguarda, faced a controversial situation in São José dos Campos, in the interior of São Paulo. While picking up her son from school, the presenter was approached by two ladies who mistook her for a flannel.
Shaken by the situation, the communicator revealed to Fabrício Correia, presenter of Thathi SBT TV, that she was leaning against a pole waiting for her son to come out of school when she was surprised by the ladies.
“One day I went to pick up my son from school, it was a day off, so I went in flip flops, it was a very hot afternoon, I was in shorts, flip flops, with my black hair down, I stopped in front of the school door, I rang the bell and I stopped in front of a pole, and there was a car parked there. There were two women, two ladies: “Are you looking at the car here?”, asked one of the ladies in the car”, asked one of the Gentleman. Silva said.
The presenter then underlined that there is no problem related to the profession, but rather to the fact that it is a stereotype of black people. “There is no problem, every profession, everything is fine, but since it is already stereotyped, a person who stands there in flip flops, has black power, a black person, is already stereotyped as always inferior, must always be in a position where she is looking at a car, she is the waitress”, he said.
And he added: “I left with my son and here in my house I cried, but I cried a lot, a lot, a lot, a lot, because you keep trying to understand if it was really normal or if it was stupid of me, but why did it hurt me so much ?”he asked.
Stereotypes and prejudices
Even more, Mayara Silva continued to vent to columnist Marcos Bulques. “No matter what position you are in, you have achieved, but the fact that you are black, that you have your black power, you will always be stereotyped […] In that moment it takes a while to digest some things, what is happening, why did the woman ask me, why did she ask me if I was looking at the car?”, he asked.
