Shakira made international headlines this Friday (29/7), after the Spanish prosecutor handed down an 8-year prison sentence for the singer for tax fraud.
The Colombian star is accused of failing to pay around 14 million euros in taxes between 2012 and 2014. According to the indictment, she has lived in Spain since 2012 and has not paid any tourist taxes.
The document was presented on Friday by the Barcelona Provincial Prosecutor’s Office after the singer, who pleaded not guilty, rejected an agreement with the prosecutor on Wednesday and said she was willing to go to trial.
Shakira’s team said they have no outstanding debts and are confident that “justice will prove them right” in the case. She has refused to make any arrangements as she regards the process as a violation of her rights.
In addition to eight years of imprisonment, the Public Prosecutor is demanding the payment of a fine of almost 24 million euros. But the case is still open and there may be an agreement before the trial.
