Edy Star, singer and icon queer dies at the age of 87


The singer Edy Star was hospitalized in serious condition after a domestic accident

Brazil says goodbye to one of its most irreverent and authentic artists. Edy StarSinger, composer, actor and interpreter of the Bahian, died on Thursday 24, at the age of 87, in San Paolo. In serious condition since last week, after having a domestic accident, the artist was unable to resist clinical complications, including respiratory failure, acute renal failure and acute pancreatitis.




According to an official note published by his advice to the magazine WhoEdy died serenely, painless as she received intensive treatment. His death represents the end of an era characterized by artistic audacity, pioneering in the queer representativeness and historical partnerships with names such as Raul Seixas.

Who was Edy Star?

Born in Salvador, Edy Star built a singular trajectory in the Brazilian arts. Has gained national notoriety as one of the members of the anthological album “The Kavennian Grand Ordm Society presents a tenth session” (1971), together with Raul Seixas, Miriam Batucada AND Sérgio Sampaio. With his provocative performances and full of aesthetic performance, he became a symbol of freedom and authenticity, at a time when being openly queer was still taboo.

In addition to the song, Edy also shone on the theater stage. It was presented in the Brazilian version of the cultured musical ‘The Rocky Horror Show’who increased the exit of his authorial album ‘Dolce Edy’. Between the 90s and 2000, he lived in Spain, where he acted as an actor, producer of shows and night clubs, keeping his vein alive.

Back in Brazil, he reported his musical career with the records ‘Cabaré Star’ (2017), produced by Zeca BaleiroAND ‘My friend Sergio Sampaio’ (2023), a tribute to another trajectory partner. His life and work have recently been celebrated in the documentary and biography ‘I just made it live: the shaded oral story of Edy Star’who reaffirms their importance as an artist who has challenged the standards and inspired generations.

Edy still leaves an unprecedented project: an album in honor of Raul Seixas, which has recorded in recent years and whose production the artist’s team tries to conclude with the support of fans through crowdfunding.
