The 40 -year -old entrepreneur Natália Cavanellas Thomazella died on Monday (7 July) during cosmetic surgery at the San Gennaro hospital, located in Moca, in the east of San Paolo. The procedure, conducted by Dr. Edgar Lopez, included three simultaneous interventions: liposuction, application of glute fat and adjustments to previously implanted mothers.
According to family relationships, Natália suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest while she was still in the operating room. The initial suspicion is that the business woman was the victim of a pulmonary embolism, serious and rare conditions, as indicated by the medical team responsible for care.
According to the official declaration of the hospital, the unit “deeply regretted the death of Natália” and said that it is “collaborating with the authorities to investigate all the circumstances of death”. The case is under investigation of the 42nd police district, as well as undergoing analysis by the Forensic Medical Institute (Iml), which should confirm the exact cause of death.
In a statement, Edgar Lopez’s medical team said that “the patient evolved with a serious complication, compatible with pulmonary embolism, a rare event”, also underlining that all safety protocols and preoperative exams have been adequately adequate. The defense underlined the professional’s experience, with more than two decades of activity, and stressed that he is providing assistance to the patient’s family.
The experts of the Brazilian society of plastic surgery warn that the “combined surgery” so called – which brings together more than one procedure in a single session – should be evaluated with extreme caution. The surgeon Daniel Regazzini underlines that the duration of the intervention and the area of the body involved are critical factors and it is recommended that the procedure does not exceed six hours and involves a maximum of 30% of the body surface. Dr. Jairo Casali stresses that recovery tends to be more delicate and risks increase with the complexity of the set of procedures.
Pulmonary embolism, a condition that may have caused Natalia’s death, occurs when a blood clot, usually originating from the legs, moves to the lungs, blocking the vessels responsible for the oxygenation of the blood. According to the cardiologist Fernando Faglioni Ribas, this block compromises both the functioning of the lungs and the heart and can cause sudden cardiovascular failure.
Although rare pulmonary embolism and associated with liposuction can occur due to the penetration of fats in the blood vessels. The surgeon Mayara de Castro Nogueira explains that this risk, although low, is documented in medical literature and requires rigid preventive measures before, during and after the procedure.
The occurrence rekindles the debate on the limits of the search for combined aesthetic interventions and the importance of the careful evaluation of each patient. The authorities continue to investigate the case.
