Diego Martins is sincere about the “stigma” in gay roles

With surprising passages of musical realities and prominent roles on television, Diego Martins has built an artistic trajectory that goes beyond performance. The actor, singer and drag Queen became known nationally playing Kelvin in “Terra e Passion”, soap opera Globo in 2023. However, long before the consecration in dramaturgy, Diego has already faced challenges relating to his identity, especially in front of homophobia.

At the age of 19, his first television appearance occurred in the “X Factor Brasil” program, in which he performed using jump, makeup and clothing considered extravagant. Although he had the support of the family, this exhibition also revealed the prejudice of close people. At the time, the boy did not accept his performance and showed discomfort with his artistic expression. According to the actor, “it was so difficult to explain to the face that he gave me and sleeps with me who is homophobic”.

In addition, when he was a minor, he lived a surprising episode that involves a neighbor. By showing affection with the then boyfriend in the common area of the building, his parents received a letter accusing Diego of having committed libidinous acts. The family intended a case, which was denied by the court. “My father and mother became lions and said we went to justice because they wanted to understand which libidinous act was,” said the actor.

Years later, Diego sees a turning point as a sort of symbolic justice. “The best revenge in the world was this. He turns on TV at 9:00 pm that I was there, in the afternoon I was there, on Saturday I am. His nephew will surely follow me,” he said, referring to the neighbor involved in the episode of homophobia.

The visibility came hard after passing the reality of Queen Stars Brazil and giving life to Kelvin, a character who starred in a homosexual relationship in the early evening. Despite his success, Diego reflects on the limited space for the LGBTQIA+television actors. “The representations of heterosexual men for gay men were very superficial,” he said.

Also recognized, the artist regrets the fact that sexuality is still a barrier for some roles. “I haven’t studied to be a gay actor. I am gay because it’s my life and I studied to be an actor”, He declared, highlighting his desire for characters with more different narratives.

Currently, Diego is dedicated to music. After signing with Universal, prepare the exit of his first solo album, “So Much”. The project also has a partnership with the singer Belo, the result of the meeting at the masked singer. “It’s always nice to get out of my bubble and my comfort zone,” he concluded.
