Even with different beliefs of the artist, the shepherd Luciano Alves highlighted the role of faith as an emotional force during the treatment and comparison of cancer
The evangelical shepherd Luciano Alves commented, this week, the importance of spirituality in the trajectory of the singer Preta Gil, who died last Sunday (20), at 49 years old. Known for acting on interreligious dialogue projects and spiritual welcome, the shepherd recognized the role of faith as a decisive factor in times of public exposure, he overcome the artist.
“Spirituality is an indispensable basis for any human being, but for publics such as Black Gil, who live under constant exposure and judgment, becomes even more essential,” he said. “It is through faith that balance is faced with pressure and strength to face the most intimate pain. I see that even in the most difficult moments, spirituality offers direction, comfort and even humanity – because it reminds us that behind cameras and phases, there is a soul that feels, fighting and looking for healing. Black has shown this with courage.”
During treatment against intestinal cancer, diagnosed in 2022, Preta Gil used social networks to share reflections on love, forgiveness and family reconnection. For the shepherd, these manifestations reveal the spiritual dimension of inner healing.
“Spirituality has the power to touch where medicine does not reach: in the soul. When preta spoke of love, forgiveness and reconnection, it has shown that true healing goes beyond the physicist – implies the restoration of the bonds, the wounded wounds and find it meaning in life,” he said. “Physical suffering can be inevitable, but the way we face it changes completely when there is faith involved. Spirituality brings us inwards, it brings us closer to God and reminds us of the value of relationships. This inner healing process is often what supports the journey of overcoming.”
Luciano Alves also commented on the public position of Preta Gil regarding his Afro-Brazilian roots and his religiosity, linked to Candomblé traditions. Although it follows a distinct Christian aspect, the shepherd underlined the importance of respect between different expressions of faith.
“I deeply believe that interreligious dialogue is essential to build a more respectful and loving society. Every expression of faith brings with it a wealth of wisdom, history and identity,” he said. “In the case of preta, his appreciation for the Afro-Brazilian roots was also a form of resistance, affirmation and love. When we respect the different manifestations of spirituality, we make room for welcome and empathy. And it is exactly what Jesus taught us: to love others, above all difference.”
When asked about the relationship between spirituality and mourning, the shepherd offered a vision based on Christian doctrine.
“In the Christian faith, we believe that death is not the end but a transition. Spirituality comforts us with the promise of eternal life, the peace that overcomes every understanding and hope of meeting,” he said. “Mourning is a painful process, but when experienced with faith, it turns into hope with hope. Black has left a legacy of light, love and truth – and for many it has been a seed of faith planted in the middle of pain. Spirituality teaches us that love never dies and that in Christ there is life even after departure.”
Luciano Alves’ declaration was shared by several religious groups on social networks as a demonstration of empathy, respect and appreciation of spirituality as a personal and social force, regardless of the doctrines.
