Announcing the cover on her social media, Serena wrote:
There comes a point in life when we must decide to move in a different direction. When you love something so much, it’s always hard to say goodbye. God, I love tennis. But now the countdown has begun. I have to focus on being a mom, on my spiritual goals, and finally discover a different but equally amazing Serena. I’m going to enjoy these few weeks before the championship.
The day before, Serena told Eurosport that she could not play forever and was already “approaching the light at the end of the tunnel.” On August 8, she won her first match in 14 months, defeating Spaniard Nuria Parrisas-Díaz at the Toronto Tournament.
I think it’s just a light at the end of the tunnel. I don’t know, I’m getting closer to the light, so…. It’s been that way for me lately. Looking forward to getting to that light,” Williams said.
When asked what this light means, she replied: “Freedom” and added that she loves to play, but “can’t do it forever.”
So sometimes you just have to do your best to enjoy the moment and show your best,” she said.
Williams has won 73 WTA titles and was world No. 1 for 319 weeks. The tennis player has seven wins at the Australian Open and Wimbledon, three at Roland Garros and six at the US Open. She is also an Olympic champion in singles and three times in doubles.
