Sam Mendes has been accepted for an Ebert Director Award –

Sam MendesA film director who made his directorial debut. American Beauty Premiered worldwide at the Toronto International Film Festival 23 years ago, on its way to the Academy Award for Best Director, the film will receive the Ebert Director Award at the fourth TIFF Tribute Awards, TIFF announced Tuesday.

The 57-year-old Brit, whose latest film, empire of light (which Searclight will be released in the US on December 9), will also have its Canadian debut at TIFF, and will receive its honor along with several other honorees at a gala on September 11 at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel.

The event is a fundraiser in support of TIFF’s Every Story Fund, which promotes diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging in film and TIFF’s core mission to transform the way people see the world through film.

“Since his first appearance on TIFF American BeautyDirector Sam Mendes brings his lyrical and gritty vision of cinema to Toronto,” said TIFF CEO. Bailey Shrimp said the statement. “We are delighted to honor his unique voice and work with this year’s TIFF Ebert Director’s Award.

The TIFF Ebert Director’s Award, named after the late film critic. Roger EbertTIFF Regular Member – recognizes filmmakers who have achieved greatness in their careers. The award marks the evolution of the festival’s Roger Ebert Golden Thumb ceremony, which in the past has been awarded to personalities such as Martin Scorsese, Claire Dennis, Ava Du Vernay, Wim Wenders s Inês Varda. Since the introduction of the TIFF Tribute Awards, it has been recognized denis villeneuve (2021), chloe zhao (2020) and Taika Waititi (2019).
