Canadian Screen Awards shift to gender-neutral acting categories

The Canadian Screen Awards will become the latest awards to shift to gender-neutral acting categories.

The Academy of Film and Television of Canada has announced a move to include leading and supporting artists in the film and television categories, starting with the 2023 National Entertainment Industry Kudosfest. The number of performance categories will increase from five to eight.

The move also aligns the film and television categories with the Canadian Screen Awards digital categories, which moved to gender-neutral acting categories in 2019.

“As a Canadian Academy, we recognize that it is our responsibility to ensure that all artists have the opportunity to fully participate in our awards programs and the industry as a whole, and this move brings us closer to that goal,” said Louis Calabro. , a member of the Academy. Interim CEO, the statement reads.

Canada’s National Film & Television Awards is following the lead of the Grammys and MTV Movie & TV Awards, shifting to genderless performance categories for more onscreen diversity, with the Emmy and Oscars still to follow.

Canadian television also includes series with more varied plots, such as so-so A CBC and HBO Max comedy created by Bilal Baig and Fab Filippo, stars Baig as a non-binary millennial who juggles different identities among friends and family in Toronto.
