Lizzo appears in reference Comedian Aries drops punchy comments in VMA speech: ‘B****, I win’

Lizzo accepted the Best Video award at the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards and used her time on stage to share her audience with young voters and fatty comments from comedian Aries Spears that have recently gone viral.

The singer-songwriter won the award for the music video for his single “About Damn Time”, beating out nominees Kendrick Lamar, Lato, Rina Sawayama and Stromae.

Presenter Bebe Rexha introduced the category by saying that the song “has always been the soundtrack to change. (…) The nominees make us want to be kinder to ourselves and kinder to each other”.

“I don’t know what ‘music videos forever’ means,” Lizzo said upon accepting the award. “But I know what your voice means, and that’s a lot. Your voice means everything to me.”

Lizzo quickly changed the direction of her speech to subtly convey the right to vote. “[Your vote] That means everything changes in this country,” he added. “So remember when you vote for your favorite artists, vote to change some of the laws that oppress us.”

“Now for the sisters-in-law who said things about me in the press…” Lizzo added, probably referring to Spears’ comments as the audience applauded. “I’m not going to say anything,” Lizzo said as she took the trophy, noting that she has a request for “applause” against enemies. “Why don’t you applaud me back? Because damn, I’m winning.”

At the beginning of the show, Lizzo also sang “About Damn Time” and “2 Be Loved”.
