Red Hot Chili Peppers Present VMA Global Icon Award to Foo Fighters Drummer Taylor Hawkins

The Red Hot Chili Peppers were honored with the Global Icon Award at the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday.

Comedy duo Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong presented the award to the Los Angeles native, with the latter noting that the honor “recognises artists who have left an indelible and compelling mark on the world and who are as influential as ever”.

Marin explained to the crowd at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey that the group originally met as classmates at Fairfax High School in Los Angeles. “They started hanging out on Sunset Strip,” Marin said. “They brought together LA punk with high-octane bass lines and an electronic stage show like we’ve never seen before.”

The band, consisting of Anthony Kiedis, Flea, Chad Smith and John Frusciante, played a two-song set consisting of “Black Summer” from their 2022 album. unlimited love and “Can’t Stop” from their 2002 album Oh really.

Kiedis began his acceptance speech by thanking Marin and Chong, calling them “two tough moms… slippers”, and then thanked his bandmates for “giving me purpose in life for the past 40 years”. If it weren’t for these guys, I’d be a floating mess in space.

Drummer Smith also dedicated the award to his “brother” Taylor Hawkins, the late drummer for the Foo Fighters, who died aged 50 in March 2022. “I dedicate this to Taylor and his family,” Smith said. “I love and miss you everyday.”

Bassist Flea, dressed in a hot pink military cut, gave a fun performance. “I love each of you watching TV and here,” he said, also expressing his love for cockroaches, land, trees and all people. “All that is not love is cowardice.”
