Johnny Depp appeared at the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards Sunday night as the famous “Moon Person”, whose face was digitally superimposed inside the helmet of a floating figure during the show’s opening moments.
“And you know what? I needed a piece,” said the 59-year-old actor, who reappeared after a commercial break.
A similar clip, pre-recorded prior to the live awards show (which was streamed from the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ), was posted on the actor’s Instagram page. In the video, Depp says, “I just want you to know that I’m available for birthdays, bar mitzvahs, bat mitzvahs, weddings, wakes… Anything old you need.”
Depp also added that when the pre-recorded images shared on Instagram are posted, he will also be able to act as a dentist.
The actor’s surprise appearance comes three months after he settled a defamation lawsuit against his ex-wife Amber Heard. Jokes about his availability refer to her stagnant acting career due to her controversial divorce and court case with Heard. As a result of the jury trial, Depp received $15 million (reduced to $10.35 million by a judge under Virginia law on punitive damages limits), while Heard received $2 million in his countersuit.
