The ‘Glee’ actress makes her debut on stage with this iconic musical and emerges triumphant with an absolute success under her arm: the public rose up to six times to applaud her.
If Fanny Brice asked for a simple favor, it seems to have been granted. The rain has not fallen on the spectacle of her and Lea Michele has risen triumphant, with a resounding success of her debut in the musical ‘Funny Girl’, on Broadway.
He hadn’t even struck a note. Michele walked onto the stage and the crowd at the August Wilson Theater rose at her feet, making it almost impossible to hear the musical’s famous opening theme, ‘Hello, gorgeous’. Total, the public would get up a total of 6 times to applaud the show, and its protagonist. Being the last one, an ideal closing for a premiere that it will be difficult for the actress to ever forget.
It’s been a long road for the performer, who has spent much of her casting career casting (unofficially) for the role of the incandescent and charming Fanny Brice. The character that catapulted her to fame, Rachel Berry, star of the teen television series, ‘Glee’, was already a big fan of Streisand’s musical. Throughout the six seasons of the series, the occasions in which Berry would interpret different themes of the musical would happen again and again. An almost inevitable synergy was thus created between Lea Michele, Rachel Berry and Fanny Brice. All under the unseen presence of the original, Barbra Streisand. Michele would interpret in fiction, ‘Don’t Rain on My Parade’, ‘I’m the Greatest Star’ and ‘People’. A full-blown public audition, come on.

The audience received his performance with vigor. In addition to the many ‘Glee’ fans who filled the seats, some professional friends of the actress and singer were in the audience. Among them, Jonathan Groff, who was enthusiastic following the rhythm of the songs, crying and jumping at different times of the show. they were there too Ryan Murphy, Zachary Quinto, Drew Barrymore, Harvey Fierstein and the producer jordan roth. The audience was clearly on Michele’s side, and she will be hard-pressed to find another opportunity to perform in front of such utterly dedicated audiences.
“We’re ‘Glee’ fans first, people second.“Declared a young woman of 24 years, Julianna DeAngelis. “I grew up listening to Lea Michele sing ‘Don’t Rain on My Parade’“. His companion, Fiona Castro, commented that they had spent 250 dollars, each, in the experience. “We definitely would have paid more” he added. “It is a historic moment considering everything that has happened with this premiere.”
And the truth is that there has been a stir with the return of ‘Funny Girl’ to the Broadway stage. It is important to remember that the musical had not been performed for almost 6 decades. In this last year, the headliner of the same was not Michele, but the actress beanie feldstein. When the musical premiered, Feldstein began to receive mediocre reviews, constantly comparing it to Barbra Streisand’s career-building performance. This raised suspicions that, perhaps, Lea Michele was in the spotlight to take her place and boost ticket sales. Once this was confirmed to be true, the producers claimed that they were looking for “take the show in a different direction.”
Nonetheless, Michele has also met with detractors on her way to Broadway. In 2020, she was withdrawing from the public spotlight following accusations from her former ‘Glee’ co-star, Samantha Marie Ware. She accused her of “traumatic microaggressions” and creating a toxic work environment. Michele would later publicly apologize for his “misbehavior and for any pain caused.”

Beyond this, on Tuesday, for the first time in many weeks, the only drama surrounding the musical was played out in the fiction of the scene.
ramin karimloowho plays Nicky Arnstein, the love interest of Michele’s character, has been able to stay out of all the hype that had built up about the musical.
“As far as I know, since I didn’t grow up knowing ‘Funny Girl’, this musical has inspired a lot of people, and it’s usually something that people hold in their mind for a long time.“commented the actor to Variety. “I don’t know anything about ‘Glee’. I didn’t know anything about Lea from her until this project, so hearing her sing for the first time was extraordinary.” In relation to Lea’s interpretation of the character, he admired the way in which “you want to immerse yourself in romance. It is very effective.“
As the interpreter very accurately prophesied, there is a song that brings the audience to their feet. “Come on, man… she dazzles with ‘Don’t Rain on My Parade’. I imagine that she would sing it in the series that everyone talks about. The way she sings makes me danceKarimloo said.
During intermission, the audience was just admiring Michele’s skills and the general energy of the theater. As the final curtain fell, fans flocked to have one last moment with the actress. Outside, Michele signed playbills and posters, as well as receiving an enormous amount of praise and admiration.
For Marlenn Sabbagh, (21 years old), who attended the show, the evening had perfectly fulfilled her expectations. “It was the best theatrical experience I’ve ever had, and I’ve been coming my whole life. The audience has been incredible. The energy was very good. I was never interested in Justin Bieber growing up. This has been my Justin Bieber concert.”
Fanny Brice was just asking for a favor. So did Rachel Berry and Lea Michele. Today everyone can see their dream come true. ‘Funny Girl’ returns to the stage, and the three (in the body of one), occupy them with a vengeance.
