In an interview with Terra, the actor comments on the innovative show ‘Seu Neyla’ and the difficult period for the art class
The restrictions imposed by the covid-19 pandemic have prompted actors, directors and theater producers to broaden their vision of how to stage a show.
On display at the FAAP Theater in Sao Paulo, the musical comedy ‘Seu Neyla’ is an example of inventiveness. The protagonist, Ney Latorraca, participates in the show at a distance, from the living room of his house in Rio.
Through a 5-meter-high by 2.5-meter screen on the stage, he interacts with the cast and the audience. Technology is placed at the service of art.
The text written by the humorist Heloísa Périssé acquires agility in the direction of the award-winning José Possi Neto. It marks the celebration of Latorraca’s 60-year career.
From good guy to bad guy, from anarchist to vampire, the artist has done everything in teledramaturgy. In the comedy, one of his most famous characters reappears in a special appearance, the priceless Seu Barbosa from ‘Pirate TV’.
Commonly called “your Neyla” on the streets, Ney Latorraca spoke to Terra.
How do you see this innovation of making the piece directly from your home? Do you miss the physical proximity of the public?
It is a new theater proposal, a differentiated work, the audience participates directly with me. I miss seeing you at the end, but I am more present than ever.
Complete a 60-year career at a critical time for the arts and arts class. How do you judge the challenge of surviving professionally in this period?
I’m a TV Globo contractor, so I’ve managed to hold my own, but our culture has been sidelined for the past four years. The portrait of a country is its culture.
Do you feel duly recognized as one of the biggest players in Brazil?
It would be false of me to say no, but my generation has great actors and actresses. And the young people who are coming are powerful.
Many TV veterans complain about the lack of good roles for older actors. Do you agree with this criticism?
Not. It is we, the actors, who have to look for great roles. I really don’t feel that kind of prejudice.
You have a gallery of great teledramaturgy characters, such as Quequé, Volpone and Vlad. Do you miss these works that are always remembered?
I miss them as if they were my children. And I really am.
He is known for his vanity. In 2024 he will turn 80. Do you cope well with aging in this society that overestimates young people?
Nobody takes my space away from me (laughs). I am 78 years old with a body of 18. I walk to Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas, in Rio, three times a week, I take care of myself. My vanity is healthy, it doesn’t hurt anyone (laughs).
What advice would today’s established Ney Latorraca give to the Ney Latorraca six decades ago at the start of his career?
I would like young Latorraca to do it all over again, because it worked for old Latorraca.
