Since the death of the Queen of Great Britain, several members of the royal family have already released public statements in which they share their experiences and emotions regarding a personal tragedy. The first was the newly-made king and first-born of Elizabeth II, Prince Charles (now Charles III). After him, the palace press service published texts from Prince William and Prince Harry. On Tuesday evening, on the official pages of the British royal family on social networks, the first comment was published by the only daughter of Elizabeth and Philip, Princess Anne.
It was an honor and privilege for me to share the last 24 hours of her life with my mother.
To witness the love and respect that so many show these days is both humbling and inspiring. We all have unique memories. I thank each and every one who shares this sense of loss.
Perhaps this is a reminder of how much we have taken for granted her presence and her contribution to our national identity. I also thank you for the support and understanding offered to my dear brother Charles as he takes on additional responsibilities as a monarch.
To my mother, the queen, thank you.
Recall that Her Highness spent the last hours of her life with her mother and did not leave Balmoral Castle for the first day after her death. After that, she personally accompanied the funeral cortege to Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland, where in the Cathedral of St. Egidius, together with her brothers, she took part in the “vigil of the princes”, becoming the first woman admitted to this sacrament.
