Ryan Reynolds discovers polyp during colon cancer prevention campaign

Actor Ryan Reynolds (“Deadpool”) participated in a campaign to raise awareness of the dangers of colon cancer and the preventative measures that should be taken. “It’s not every day that you raise awareness of something that is sure to save lives. That’s enough motivation for me to show you a camera being shoved up my ass,” the Deadpool star said at the beginning of the video.

Reynolds’ test is a way of trying to identify the disease at an early stage. And this is what happened. While recording his colonoscopy, doctors discovered a polyp.

“You did such good preparation that I was able to find an extremely thin polyp on the right side of the colon,” the doctor told Reynolds after the procedure.

“This potentially saved your life. I’m not kidding. I’m not too dramatic. This is exactly why you performed this procedure,” added the doctor.

In the campaign, Reynolds teamed up with actor Rob McElhenney (“It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”) to record their colonoscopies.

The two are co-owners of a Welsh football team, Wrexham AFC, in the British fifth division. And the idea of colonoscopy initially started as a bet between the two.

“We’re so competitive, Ryan and I made a bet last year,” explained McElhenney. The bet was that if he learned to speak Welsh, Reynolds would undergo a public colonoscopy.

“Let it bet?” Reynolds said. “I do not remember”. But by the time McElhenney starts speaking Welsh, Reynolds admits he made the bet and lost.

Between jokes, Reynolds and McElhenney made it clear that this was a serious procedure that could save countless lives.

“Rob and I turned 45 this year,” Reynolds said. “And you know, part of being that age is having to undergo a colonoscopy. It’s a simple step that can literally – and literally is – save your life.”

Colorectal cancer is the third most frequently diagnosed cancer in the United States, according to the American Cancer Society.

After doing McElhenney’s colonoscopy, doctors found three small polyps on the actor. “They weren’t a big deal, but it’s definitely good that we found them soon and removed them,” the doctor said.

McElhenney took the opportunity to ask the doctor what he could do to prevent a recurrence.

The doctor said there is still no evidence that dietary changes can make a difference in cancer prevention, “but what makes the difference is screening and surveillance,” he added.
