Last weekend, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark celebrated her 82nd birthday at Marselisborg Castle, her official royal residence. Despite rumors about the imminent abdication of the throne in favor of the eldest son Frederick, the monarch is very active and does not seem to be going to retire.
Margrethe II, as usual, celebrated her birthday with her family gathered at her residence in Aarhus. For the first time since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, the traditional parade of the Royal Life Guards was held there. The Monarch, Crown Prince Frederik, his wife Mary and their four children greeted by crowds of Danes from the balcony of the castle. The Queen on this day was in a blue plaid suit and a matching silk shirt. The image was completed with a massive brooch and earrings with blue precious stones.
In addition, on Saturday in Copenhagen, in the Caritas fountain built back in 1608 on Gammeltor Square – translated into Russian as “Mercy” – one could see “dancing golden apples”. According to the tradition that appeared in the XVIII century, on the birthday of the monarch, copper balls covered with 24-carat gold, symbolizing golden apples, are lowered into the fountain and they balance on the jets. It is considered one of the attractions of Copenhagen in mid-April.
In the network, her birthday was marked by the presentation of a new portrait – Margrethe poses on it, sitting in an armchair, in a gray ribbed knitted dress, wrapped in a red checkered blanket.

Margrethe Alexandrina Thorhildur Ingrid was born on April 16, 1940 at Amalienborg Palace in Copenhagen. Her father is King Frederick IX of the Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg dynasty, and her mother is the Swedish princess Ingrid. They had no male children, and in 1953, Margrethe, as the eldest of three daughters, received the status of “presumptive heir to the throne”, in accordance with a new law that granted women the right to succession to the throne in exceptional circumstances. Margrethe received her primary education at home, then studied at a simple school in Copenhagen, and in 1955-1956 at a boarding school in the UK. Already at the age of 18, she became a member of the State Council of the country and chaired its meetings in the absence of the king. In addition, she did volunteer service in the women’s corps of the Danish Air Squadron, and from 1960 she studied at universities in Denmark and other European countries, primarily in the UK.
On January 14, 1972, after the death of her father, she became queen. She is the second woman and the second Margrethe on the Danish throne. Her predecessor Margrethe I ruled the country in the early Middle Ages. In recent years, the press has written that the queen wants to cede the throne to her 54-year-old son Frederick, however, judging by the activity of the monarch, who celebrated the 50th anniversary of her reign in January, this will not happen soon.
