
American actor Leonardo DiCaprio congratulated indigenous leaders Sonia Guajajara and Célia Xakriabá on Sunday’s elections (2/10). The two were elected to the office of federal deputies by the PSOL.
“Congratulations to Sonia Guajajara for winning a seat in the Brazilian Congress, making history as the first indigenous woman elected as a federal deputy. This representation is essential to ensure that the rights of indigenous peoples, the guardians of our forests, are recognized and respected. . ” , the actor said in a publication.
She then extended her congratulations to Célia Xakriabá, “one of the two indigenous women to win the battle in the Brazilian Congress”.
“The Amazon and the health of our planet are in very good hands with these incredible leaders.”
Guajajara was elected by São Paulo with 156,966 votes, while Xakriabá will represent Minas Gerais after receiving 101,154 votes.
Before the elections, actor Leonardo DiCaprio had already talked about politics in Brazil, inviting young people to register for their elections.
